JAGG Celebrates 15 Years! http://www.jaggenterprizes.ca/2014/01/20/jagg-celebrates-15-years/ http://www.jaggenterprizes.ca/2014/01/20/jagg-celebrates-15-years/#comments Mon, 20 Jan 2014 22:50:15 +0000 http://www.jaggenterprizes.ca/?p=835 On January 19, 1999, JAGG Enterprizes was established as a family owned and operated waterproofing company. Over the years we have built strong relationships with our clients, suppliers, and contractors and have established everlasting friendships. Starting a new business is never easy, and we are thankful that our early clients trusted us with their home and supported our efforts in becoming a successful waterproofing company. Their support, positivity, hope and loyalty is what helped us become the company we are today.

In August, 1999 we completed a repair for a new client, Pat L. who wrote a testimonial specifying, “I would recommend JAGG Enterprizes to others and definitely call again if needed.” Last year we received a call from Pat again who -14 years later – was still extremely pleased with the work we did and needed more work done in her rental property. Our customers are our greatest asset, without people like Pat (and many other supportive clients) we wouldn’t be here today. Your loyalty to our company is cherished dearly and very much appreciated.

Although JAGG has grown and developed substantially since 1999, our core values, and business practices have remained the same. The science behind our repairs has also improved; ensuring that we are always on top of the latest technologies is important to us. Since 1999 JAGG has expanded to complete renos and landscaping repairs for current clients, and has gained the knowledge and licenses required to perform back water valves – a growing issue in the city of Toronto. It is our goal to make all our clients feel comfortable with the repair details and the ongoing job, and leave all our clients feeling confident and proud of our repair and a job well done for years to come.

Since 1999, JAGG Enterprizes has been to over 12,000 homes, won ‘best of 2012’ and ‘best of  2013’ awards,  raised $3,200 for Sick Kids Hospital (Autism Research), and had JAGG and employees donate time and materials for a family in need. We have also become the preferred waterproofing specialist by Newstalk1010 ‘Home Improvement’ host and contractor Frank Cohn, successfully received drain layer, drain contractor and renovator Toronto Municipal Licenses, and successfully established itself as an effective, reliable and professional waterproofing company.

Once again, thank you all for your support and belief in our company, cheers to another 15 years.

A Shattering End to 2013 http://www.jaggenterprizes.ca/2014/01/06/a-shattering-end-to-2013/ http://www.jaggenterprizes.ca/2014/01/06/a-shattering-end-to-2013/#comments Mon, 06 Jan 2014 22:34:12 +0000 http://www.jaggenterprizes.ca/?p=804 We hope you all had a wonderful holiday and kicked off your New Years with a ‘bright’ bang. December 20, 2013 marked the beginning of JAGG’s yearly winter holiday shutdown – and it couldn’t come at a better time. Whether you were victim of a power outage or fallen trees on your yard, or just a good citizen who volunteered your time or warm home for those in need, by now everyone has had their own experience with the ice storm that struck Ontario shortly before Christmas. In total, around 600,000 homes were without power from December 21, with around 100 customers still without power as of January 1, 2014.

Although JAGG was on shutdown during this time, we periodically checked messages and answered anything that required immediate attention. However, if you were trying to reach us during the storm, unfortunately due to the power outage our phones were also down. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Anyone with a sump pit/pump begins to have a sense of worry during a power outage. Although these pits do a wonderful job at collecting the storm water around our homes, without power, it is generally useless. Sump pits will continue to fill up but without a working pump, the water has nowhere to go. If your basement experienced flooding during this winter storm, chances are the fault lies in your sump pump or lack there of.

Many of you were affected by the July 8th flooding earlier this year and once again by the ice storm this December. This may be Mother Nature’s way of preparing us for a stormy future and it may be time to invest in battery back up systems so you and your family can rest easy during the next storm. A battery backup will ensure your sump pit doesn’t overflow the next time your power goes out, especially during a wet storm. JAGG Enterprizes installs sump pits/pumps as well as battery backups when requested. At the same time if you lived in a home that lost power during both major storms of the year, you may want to consider investing in a generator. The generator may not be able to keep your entire home powered, but you can use it to power the important utilities in your household such as a sump pump, fridge/freezer, microwave (to heat food), heaters, radio, charge phones, and provide oxygen to the fish in your tank, which will allow you and your family to live comfortably during a winter storm.

The holidays are over but the New Year has just begun. For now, we are glad power has finally been restored and are prepared to ‘brrrrrr’ our way through the rest of, what looks to be, an extremely cold winter.

Thank you to Rico Giovannini for the wonderful pictures from the ice storm.

This past Saturday, George Cabral and his daughter Jackie, represented JAGG Enterprizes live on CFRB Newstalk 1010 between 8 and 9am. George and Frank covered many waterproofing topics, hot on people’s minds after the recent flooding of July 8th, 2013.

Luckily, thanks to technology, you don’t always have to be an early bird. We have the entire Home Improvement show for you right here on our website for you to enjoy. Cheers!

As promised, visit our new subsidy programs page to learn about the new subsidies available and why they are beneficial.

I live in Toronto and my 60+ year house is at the bottom of a hill with a sewer outside which I try to keep clear of debris. When we have a heavy rain for an extended period of time the rain comes up my drain in the floor of the basement. Would a back water valve help me solve this issue? Please let me know if this is what I need and do you install them. Thank you.-Barbara

Yes, a backwater valve would resolve this issue, and yes we do install them. Give us a call in the office or sign         up for a free estimate online and we will be in touch.-The JAGG Team

Let it Rain? http://www.jaggenterprizes.ca/2013/07/09/let-it-rain/ http://www.jaggenterprizes.ca/2013/07/09/let-it-rain/#comments Tue, 09 Jul 2013 17:04:48 +0000 http://www.jaggenterprizes.ca/?p=567 Wow where to start? By now everyone has had their fair share of crazy rain experiences from seeing your roads flooded, to hearing about all the road closures and possibly even being ‘blessed’ with a flooded basement.

Toronto was hit hard last night and theweathernetwork.com reported that 126mm of Rain fell at Pearson Airport breaking records set back in November, 1954 by Hurricane Hazel when 121.4mm fell. According to CFRB, during all this rain fall, Toronto Hydro also reported 300,000 power outages while many other cities in the GTA were also effected.

With all the rain and power outages many people are now starring at flooded, wet or damp basements, but you may not have to panic. As many of you have seen, when massive amounts of rain falls in Toronto, the city pretty much comes to a stand still and the Marine units come out to rescue people from flooded Go Trains. Consider your home similar to the City of Toronto during this time.

If this is the first time you’ve ever had a problem with water in your basement, it might just be a case of water-overload.

Sump Pits/Pumps

If you have a sump pit, it might not have been able to keep up with the constant water. If you have a sump pit and your power went out last night, your pump may have stopped working altogether. If you don’t have a battery back up you may want to consider purchasing one for your sump pit to keep your sump pump working even if your electricity isn’t.

If you notice water coming in where the wall meets the floor, it’s possible that the weeper around your house just couldn’t compete with the overwhelming rain. This only happens in the most severe cases, as we all saw last night. As long as you KNOW your weeper is working fine, the only thing to do is dry up and move on. If you have a home built in the early 1970’s or earlier and have never had your weeper replaced, your home was probably built with old clay weeping tiles which have been known to clog, break and work less effectively over a few decades and you may want to look in to having a new plastic weeper installed.

The water could have also come in through a basement window, especially if you were in an area with flooding last night. Just like your weeper, your window well drain may have been overwhelmed, not allowing the water to drain at the rate of the rainfall.

Concrete foundations

If you have a concrete foundation take a look at your wall for entry points; you may see water marks, wet walls, a crack, or a rod hole. If your basement is finished take down the drywall and open the wall in the leaking area to pinpoint where the water is coming from. Although this might be a one time leak now, as long as a visible crack or rod hole is there, it always has the chance of leaking again. Cracks and rod holes can be fixed in a few hours and are extremely affordable. If you’ve discovered a leak in your concrete unfinished basement, send us pictures of the leaking area, give us a description if necessary, and we can let you know how to proceed within hours.

As the City of Toronto recuperates from the devastating effects of Mother Nature’s fury, the importance of a sump pump/pit and back water valve in every Toronto home is immense to prevent flooding. The City of Toronto offers a subsidy to homeowners for installing a sump pump system in your home hoping to take a load off the cities sewers to give Toronto a fighting chance during heavy rains. There is also a subsidy for installing a back water valve which helps to prevent flooding when city sewers are overwhelmed. JAGG Enterprizes and the City of Toronto urges every Toronto resident to have a back water valve and sump pit installed to help combat Mother Natures next attack. Read up on the subsidy programs today.

Monitor your basement during the next few days of rain to determine if the rain persists once the heavy backup has cleared away. Be pro active for your basement and address any problems before they become larger and more costly to deal with. Enjoy the summer rain knowing your basement is dry.

When Basement Meets Summer http://www.jaggenterprizes.ca/2013/06/25/when-basement-meets-summer/ http://www.jaggenterprizes.ca/2013/06/25/when-basement-meets-summer/#comments Tue, 25 Jun 2013 17:03:32 +0000 http://www.jaggenterprizes.ca/?p=563 Friday was the first day of summer and the heat combined with humidity made for a nice outdoor sauna all weekend. As we know, with summer comes a lot of things: heat, BBQ, sun tans, and of course condensation. If you see moisture on the basement walls, or the walls are damp, it doesn’t mean you have a leak (although you could too). Condensation is popular with basement walls especially in the summer. It occurs when warm summer air comes into contact with your cool basement walls, and basically looks like your basement is sweating. It’s the same thing that happens to your ice caps when you take them outside.

If you own a new home you might be familiar with the constant condensation in your basement. If you notice condensation in your new home, and notice EVEN MORE condensation during the summer – that’s perfectly normal. Remember, your home is made from new fresh materials, like concrete, that is made with water. As the concrete walls dry up, condensation forms.

Have no fear, there are a few simple, cost effective ways to get rid of the condensation from your walls without calling JAGG to fix anything. First, make sure to keep all vents open and boxes away from your basement in order to keep the air circulating down there. Second, purchase a dehumidifier, it’s a simple as that. The dehumidifier will gather all the water coming off your walls and will keep everything dry during this summer heat and as you move into your new homes.

As Canadians we know the warm summer weather comes and goes in a flash, so set up those dehumidifiers and put on your swim suits and sunscreen and enjoy the weather while it lasts.

The Great Thaw http://www.jaggenterprizes.ca/2013/03/25/the-great-thaw/ http://www.jaggenterprizes.ca/2013/03/25/the-great-thaw/#comments Mon, 25 Mar 2013 18:46:23 +0000 http://www.jaggenterprizes.ca/?p=489 Ok ok the great thaw is a bit of an exaggeration, but it’s that time of year our foundations fear. As the mountains of snow begin to melt away, puddles of water form. The added amounts of water consistently against the foundation can mean a swimming pool in the basement with just one tiny crack.

If you have an apparent crack (even if it’s not leaking) now may be the time to get it fixed in order to prevent what could be thousands of dollars in damages to furniture etc., especially if you plan on finishing your basement this season or in the near future. According to a 2011 article in the globe and mail, the Canadian mortgage and housing corp. announced that basement flooding accounts for $140 million in insurance claims a year. This doesn’t include all the flooding damages not reported to insurances.

As the article states, if you don’t have a leak yet there are many things you can do prevent one. This, and learning how to spot a leak can also be confirmed in additional leak information.

Keep in mind, the winter thaw is here and within the next couple weeks there will be large amounts of water on your property. If you have a leak act now before more water makes its way into your living space. Sign up for a free estimate today.

Its going to be a cold and rainy Halloween night. Make sure the kids have waterproof shoes comfortable enough for a long night of walking. Warm clothes underneath costumes will be needed, preferably water resistant jackets if possible to prevent your child from getting sick. Although drivers are more alert for kids crossing the street on Halloween, make sure your child has a bright costume, or maybe even reflective tape on their wrist or ankle in order to be seen easier.

Pumpkin Carvings

Pumpkin carving is one of the most exciting crafts when getting ready for Halloween. Visit this website for some creative and artistic free Pumpkin Stencils: http://orangeandblackpumpkins.com/

Candy Time

The best part about Halloween is all the candy you get to bring home with you. However, make sure you check the candy before you give it to the kids. Throw away anything opened or suspicious looking.

Halloween is two days away, get your costumes and candy ready and prepare to have a fun filled spook-tastic night.

While safely enjoying the heat keep in mind that the coming winter will bring us into some major freeze- thaw periods and your basement may see the results. With the current lack of rain it may be difficult to know if you have a leak because there won’t be a leak if there’s no rain. We encourage everyone to plan ahead for the winter and soak your foundation walls with hose water. If no water comes in you should be ready for winter. If you see water inside the basement, now is the perfect time to get it fixed. If your basement leaks in the winter it may be difficult to complete your repair as weather plays a factor on some repairs. Enjoy the current heat but prepare yourself for a wet winter.
