| We’ve just found a crack in our basement when we took down the wall to renovate. Can I fix it later or does it have to be now? | Because your basement was finished you can’t be sure how long it’s been leaking (if it’s already started). Removing the wall has given you a chance to replace any damaged insulation studding, etc., as well as fix the leak, at a more affordable price, before your renovate. This would prevent any future damage after your new renovation is complete, and decrease your chances for health problems. |
| What do I do to correct this water problem? | Contacting a reliable contractor, specializing in basement leaks, that would give you the best solution along with alternate approaches, should there be any, that can be taken. Remember, some cases are more intense then others, you would have to understand the repair. The right company shoud be able to explain details to you. |
| What procedure should I go with? | Listen to the advice of a specialist, sometimes what may be needed to correct your problem may be due to something other than your foundation. An estimator would be able to narrow down the problem. With careful examination they will determine these factors as well as give you the best solution to your problem. Remember the most expensive procedure just like the least expensive is not always the best resolution to your specific leak. |
| My basement is finished, is it a problem to have a repair done? | No need to panic, most repairs can be approached from the exterior; there is no need to take apart a newly renovated basement. But always be cautious, if extensive damage appears on the inside it is advisable to also replace that damaged material. |
| Do I have to worry about my basement cracking elsewhere? | It’s not impossible to find other cracks in your basement due to shrinkage. But having a repair completed in one area is not the cause of a new crack a few feet away. In most cases, the crack already existed, in other cases it is the result of your house continuously shifting and settling (more common with newer homes). |
| I have other cracks, but they don’t leak, should I fix them? | It’s always advisable to fix them if you plan on finishing your basement. If not they could always hold for a while, just remember if a crack exists it will eventually leak, it’s only a matter of time, therefore regular inspection of your basement would allow you to correct the problem before the severity of it becomes more costly. |
